About us

The WTG has a number of members of all different ages and skills and we all work together to perform a great show. We always welcome and encourage new members to join and take part in what aspects of theatre they would like to do, but also be encouraged to try new corners of theatre, from painting set to writing a script, from acting on stage to light and sound backstage. Everything is important. It’s also a great way to meet new people and make new friends.

If you are thinking about joining and would like to know a little bit more about the group, just browse down and take a look at each members profile and there reason why they joined the WTG and why they keep coming back for more.

Paul Agar

I have been attending the Washington theatre group since 2004. In that time I’ve been able to get involved in lots of different aspects of theatre such as acting, set building, set design, marketing, special effects and stage managing. This year I will be playing Prince Dashing in the upcoming pantomime Snow White and the Magic Mirror. Being in this group has helped me overcome a lot of social fears as well as gain a lot of social experience and friends. I get a lot of encouragement from the group which gives me strength and courage when performing on stage.

John Appleton

I joined WTG in February 2007, after a short twelve-year break from am-dram.  Since joining I’ve found myself playing such parts as a seven-year-old Spitfire impersonator, a pantomime dame and an Edwardian gent with fabulous mutton chops.  It’s been a big confidence booster and I’d recommend it to anyone, even those who don’t feel they have much confidence, as that’ll come in time.  It’s a very friendly group, great fun to work with and I hope to add to the list of bizarre characters I’ve played in the years to come.

Ann-Marie Cook

I joined the group while on some sort of narcotics. I have tried to escape on a number of occasions since but have been dragged back kicking and screaming. After 12 years I am still looking for a way out any ideas on a post card. The rest of the members are also held captive please help !!!

Kate Upshall Davis

I joined the group in February 2004 by accident. I’m one of the many who came down with a friend to keep them company and then ended up enjoying it so much that I stayed. Since then I have made various set and props including wearable horses, skull rock and a gingerbread house. I’ve also acted in all of the productions, and particularly enjoy comedy, slapstick parts. Whilst putting a show on can be one of the most stressful experiences, when it all comes together, and the adrenalin kicks in, nothing beats it. I keep coming back every week because I love being around creative people who enjoy what they do. I’ve taken the responsibility as Chair for 2007-08 and I'm now trying my hand at directing 'Blue Remembered Hills' and ‘Pygmalion’. I’ve made some great friends, had lots of fun, and would recommend it to anyone.

Pamela Jane Elliott

I joined the group in 2001 and in that time I have acted in various productions and have also been involved behind the scenes. In 2010 as well as acting in the mid year show, I also directed one of the sketches which was at times challenging but at the same time rewarding watching the end product. This was helped by having a dedicated group of people to work with. I love coming down every week, you never know what you might get to do. Its always fun, exciting and above all I get to be with a great bunch of people.

Robert Hardy (Bob)

I am retired but not yet too old to enjoy life. I used to be a Lecturer in Sheet metalwork and welding for 17 years and then in Computer Studies for 8 years. I have always been interested in theatre and joined an amateur drama group in Felling back in 1973 where I played a few parts and also did background sounds. After moving to Washington I decided I would like to get back into theatre. I joined the WTG in February 2007. It was one of the best things that I’ve done. Everyone in the group is so friendly and helpful and I hope to learn a lot from them. I have been active in the production of two plays and two pantomimes (including the current Snow White in January of 2009). Being a member of the WTG is great fun and I ain’t gonna leave, unless they kick me out!

Nigel Judson

When I joined the group in 2007 I quickly established myself as the "technical guy" and was pretty much locked in the sound and lighting box. However thanks to some cunning and trickery I escaped the box and made it onto the stage. Since then I've become a bit of a jack of all trades trying my hand at almost every aspect of the theatre, the highlight of which was directing one of our shows. Its thanks to the help and support of the this creative and slightly crazy group of people that I've been able try all these things. Also there's not much that can beat the buzz you get at the end of a show when you hear that applause, whether you're on stage or back stage. It makes it all worth it.

Matthew Littledyke

I enjoy coming to the theatre group because it gives me the chance to interact with other people on stage. I also like helping backstage moving scenery. It also gives me the opportunity to socialise with other people and the fun making new friends. Since being in the group I have gained more confidence.

Richard Littlejohn

I joined Washington Theatre Group in September 2008. I've never been involved in theatre before, but I used to enjoy running sound and lighting for bands at gigs so I thought I'd come along and give it a go. Since then I've really enjoyed coming along each week, watching the latest performance come together and getting to know a highly talented and friendly group of people.

Matthew Lowe

I joined the Washington Theatre Group in 2006 and have enjoyed partaking in the current productions which has involved different styles of acting as well as singing. I am looking forward to taking part in further productions and developing different skills, as well as continuing to work with the great friends I have made here.

Marie Lovell

(21-ish) I've been a member of the group for around 5 years. A fabulous asset to the world of philanthropic performance, I have immense talent for singing, dancing, acting, writing and producing is only matched by the skill I bring to dealing with the inevitable jealousy I face from less valuable members of the group. My motto is 'always think of the little people'. Being part of WTG has given me the chance to act, dance sing, write, produce, do technical stuff and write songs, in spite of the fact that I really have no talent for any of these things. I've played baddies (boo), goodies (yeah), fairies, pirates, sidekicks and even a few humans (including a merry man who was really a woman). What I love about the group is that there is something for everyone to do and we all work together to make the best of what each person can offer.

Peter Marshall

I’ve been involved in theatre since the age of nine. I still remember playing my first performance as Tiny Tim in Scrooge. Funnily enough by the time we performed the show I had grown a few inches, nevertheless it got me hooked into theatre ever since.  Being a member since 2000, I’ve been involved in all aspects of theatre, from acting to directing, from painting sets to lights and sound. I’ve written four pantomimes, most recently being Snow White and the Magic Mirror and each production we've done together has been a wonderful experience, everyone is so great and fun to work with and they give so much encouragement and enthusiasm to the shows. I've also tried to play an active role in the committee over the years and I'm trying my hand at publicity. The people in this group are my nearest and dearest friends and it is always been a pleasure to perform with them.

I joined the WTG in March 2011 after a two year gap from performing. I wanted to get back into a friendly theatre environment and it didn't disappoint. I've had experience of many aspects of productions and had the chance to make great friends.

As a member since February 2004, I enjoy being involved in the group and its performances. Working along side its members who I consider to be my friends. I think they deserved the recognition these people get for performing shows for charities, such as the 'Night of Horror' show. I help where I can and I feel that being apart of this group is rewardable in many ways.

I joined Washington Theatre Group in July 2009, mainly because of my interest in writing, but also with a sneaking desire to get up on stage, too. I was first involved behind-the-scenes on the 2010 pantomime production, but have since got involved on both the writing and acting sides - so I got my wish! It’s great fun, and I’d urge anyone interested in any aspect of drama to come along and have a go.

And the Oscar goes to.....!
I joined the Washington Theatre Group back in 2006 and have been involved in many fantastic productions, both on and off the stage. When I'm not giving an award winning performance on stage I'm directing, or is that demanding an award winning performance from the cast! The WTG has really helped me develop my skills in the world of theatre. The Oscars here I come!
